Formation and Development of the Cult of the Intercession of the Theotokos in Medєval Ukraine …….. 5–24, In the article the author dates the formation of the cult of the Protection of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the early 11th century. This cult was formed in the intellectual environment of Kyiv. Likewise, the iconography of the Protection of the Theotokos was formed in Kyiv, and from there it spread throughout Ukraine and, later, into Russia. The Mongol invasion intensifєd the Protection of the Theotokos cult as a defense. It was actively developing in the Galicia-Volyn state, in particular in the Kholm and Peremyshl. In the late Middle Ages, this cult became widespread among the middle class of Ukrainian knighthood – the boyars and castle servants who formed the social basis for the formation of the Ukrainian Cossacks. When the Cossacks became representative of the political rights of Ukrainians, the cult of the Protection of the Theo-tokos became the state’s – the heavenly patron of Ukraine. Its peak dates to the heyday of the Cossack Republic and Ukrainian baroque culture – the end of the 17th – the first half of the 18th century. The Russian aggression against Ukraine in 2014 updated the appeal to national traditions, in particular, giving impetus to the revival of the cult of the Protection of the Theotokos.
